Being given the opportunity to reflect away from Australia my position as an Indigenous Australian man and how best I can contribute to a global identity of being Indigenous Australian, which I feel needs to be fostered. |
Vincent, a descendant of the Kalkadoon people from Queensland on his father's side, and the Kiwai people of Parama Island north of the Torres Strait on his mother's side, grew up in Cairns. As a Charlie Perkins Scholar he was the first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander to graduate with a PhD from Cambridge. At Trinity College, Cambridge, Vincent completed both a PhD in Education and Psychology and a MPhil in Psychology and Education.
He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Psychology from James Cook University and was awarded First Class Honours in Anthropology.
Vincent is a Senior Lecturer at James Cook University, Cairns within the Indigenous Education and Research Centre where he teaches within the Indigenous Studies program for undergraduate subjects. He is also an adjunct researcher with the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education working on teacher-student relationships, educational climate and social and emotional mental health. He also provides educational psychology consultative advice to organisations involved in the development and mentoring of Indigenous students (12-17) through academic and life skill literacy endeavours.
