MPhil in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management
Green Templeton College, Oxford

2023 Charlie Perkins Scholar
2023 Chevening Scholar

I want to use the knowledge gained from this MPhil to combine my two different cultural perspectives and bring interdisciplinary to the forefront of biodiversity conservation and management in Australia. I want to integrate traditional Indigenous knowledge with Western practices to get the best possible outcomes for Australian flora, fauna and the environments they live in.
Teresa is a proud Dunghutti Gumbaynggirr woman who mostly grew up on Birpai Country. She has a deep passion for ecology conservation and the promotion of Indigenous Science methodologies. Teresa completed her Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management (Honours) at Charles Sturt University. Her First Class Honours Topic was "Effect of soil treatment on the growth and foliage chemistry of three Eucalyptus species grown in a plantation as a food source for koalas." Teresa has been supporting female and female-identifying students through CSIRO's Young Indigenous Womens STEM Academy as a Academic Coordinator.

For the research component of the MPhil, Teresa wants to complete an archive study to get a deeper understanding of the Australian environment in relation to Indigenous science and biodiversity conservation related to the koala. She wants to use the qualitative science of reading journals, books and looking at maps/drawings to get an idea of the traditional Australian environment, and then link that to contemporary quantitative Western observations and science to get an understanding of koala populations decline and reduced habitat regions. Teresa also believes an archive study will provide insight into the ways in which Indigenous science has aided in the successful management of the Australian environment for 60,000 years.

Teresa hopes to use her knowledge and skills learnt in her MPhil to return to Australia and complete her PhD.
