I need to create more avenues where I can effectively influence decisions regarding Indigenous-led research and Indigenous informed policymaking. Hence my desire to complete the Masters of Public Policy at Oxford. |
Hmalan is of Tiwi, Iwaidja, Kaytej and Warlpiri descent. She has a Bachelor of Science (Honours in Environmental Science) whilst also majoring in Geography and minoring in French. She completed her studies at the Australian National University, where she still plays a vital part in their alumni network and supporting Indigenous students continue their tertiary education, sitting on several advisory groups and conferences. Hmalan spent 15 years supporting the grassroot establishment of the Aboriginal Research Practitioners' Network. Under the direction of five Aboriginal Elders, Hmalan worked at over 30 Indigenous communities across northern Australia on land and water research projects amplifying Indigenous voices. This enabled around 50 Indigenous people to secure employment on-Country who were recognised for the value of their Indigenous research skills outside of formal western education systems.
